Branch Events - Planned Activities for the Forthcoming Year

On a Wing and a Prayer - Wednesday 8 October 2008

Guest speaker: Tony Anderson - Marketing Director, Places for People

At this year’s Kent Annual Marketing Lecture Tony Anderson will give a stimulating talk about the marketing phenomenon of low-cost airlines, the spectacular success of brands like easyJet and Ryanair and the role that marketing plays in the fight for survival of all airlines at a time of record oil prices.

After rising through the marketing ranks at British Airways and Thomas Cook , Tony turned from gamekeeper to poacher when he was appointed Marketing Director of easyJet. As only the airline’s third employee he helped launch the airline that became an internet pioneer, a household name and a major force in European aviation. Tony went on to become Marketing Director of the easyGroup and held positions on the board of several of Stelios’s companies. After five years at easyGroup, Tony moved on and held positions at pioneering online bank Egg, where he served as Retail Marketing Director and TNS PLC. More recently Tony joined the board of the UK’s largest property management & regeneration company Places for People and became Marketing Director of The Children’s Mutual. He is an adviser to a number of technology and alternative energy companies in the Cambridge area.

Marketing Magazine has ranked Tony among the top marketing names in the UK and he has been a finalist for the Marketeer of the year awards.

In the lecture Tony will talk about how a new breed of low cost airlines rewrote the marketing textbooks taking on the Goliaths of the aviation business. He will also focus on the critical roles that direct sales, aggressive PR and the internet played in this barnstorming success.

Dr Paul Fifield - Marketing in a Recession - Wednesday 12 November 2008

Upturns and downturns have always been with us. For a lot of people though, this will be their first recession and they are understandably concerned. But why look on the bleak side?

Recessions aren’t all bad, they can be very useful; like a particularly hard winter they tend to remove all sorts of parasites:

  • Companies and managers who make customer promises they can’t keep
  • Sales organisations masquerading as marketing organisations
  • Mediocre marketers who have made a living (up to now) with undifferentiated offers, to undifferentiated markets and been just too lazy to change
  • Short term businesses that believe (are really convinced) that profits come first and customers second

And this recession looks like being even better than the last – we could be facing structural change this time so that normal service will not be resumed when its all over.

The time:

  • 7.00 p.m. Reception and Networking
  • 7.30 p.m. Speaker (inc. Buffet Supper)

The cost:

  • £35.00 CIM members and students
  • £40.00 CIM non-members

The date: Wednesday, November 12th 2008

The place: Kings Hill Conference & Training Centre, 6 Alexander Grove, Kings Hill, West Malling, Kent, ME19 4GR

Each delegate will receive a copy of Paul Fifield’s forthcoming book ‘’Masterclass’ – £29.99 RRP.

Penny Williams - Integrated Marketing - Wednesday 11 March 2009

Having worked as Sales Director for a variety of commercial radio stations across East Anglia and the Midlands, Penny came to Kent as Managing Director of Invicta Radio – part of Capital Radio Group. Through her marketing knowledge and skill she was able to successfully achieve the highest audience figures in the station’s (Invicta Radio) history and developed a team that doubled its profit margin for the business to 51% - the highest in the regional stations in the group.

Penny then took on the role of Regional Marketing and Operations Director for the South stretching from Birmingham across to Cardiff and along the south coast. Within this role she was Event Director for the Party in the Park series across the country as an integral part of the marketing strategy to win audiences for the radio stations.

The KM Group was seeking radio expertise for their group of local radio stations in Kent which was an exciting challenge. Initially Penny joined as Head of Radio for the kmfm stations, which at the time was five and developing into seven analogue stations and one digital. During this time she successfully re-branded and repositioned the stations and launched one new station in Ashford and re-launched another in Maidstone following its acquisition In addition Penny developed and launched new websites for the group, following its re-brand.

Using this experience, Penny has helped give consumers a multimedia platform in which to engage with. Leading the company’s marketing team to deliver local media on demand, in print or on air, the KM group delivers an integrated proposition to its consumers. In her presentation, Penny will give some interesting insights and examples of how to successfully integrate a wide range of marketing techniques.

James Hammond - Branding beyond the logo (Brand Halo) - Wednesday 10 June 2009

In this lecture, Brand Doctor James Hammond will present the EPIC model of building a powerful brand. He will argue that a brand is a ‘total customer experience retained in long-term memory’ and will show how all brands are emotional, not rational. James will explain how the four-stage process of Emotion, Perception, Innovation and Communication can turn ‘bland’ into ‘brand’.

James will draw on information from his international best-selling book Branding Your Business to explain how branding is about psychology, not technology. Key points include:

  • How features and tangible benefits are ‘old hat’ and how emotional benefits are the key, because ‘all brands are emotional.’
  • How perception drives emotion – and how the five senses play a unique part.
  • How to create ‘Brand Reflections’ to deliver the ultimate customer experience.
  • How the age of storytelling is now upon us…and how to capitalise on it.

The time:

  • 7.00 p.m. Reception and Networking
  • 7.30 p.m. Speaker

The cost:

  • £22.50 CIM members and students
  • £27.50 CIM non-members
