Ever “Googled” yourself?

By emmy
Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

I have, along with new friends, business acquaintance’s, potential boyfriends, potential illnesses I have, how to cook things, finding answers to pub quiz questions (thank god Google for mobile came along). It goes further, I have no idea where London Zoo is, or where the local Indian takeaway is but I don’t need to know, Google knows everything!

I chat to my friends on Google chat (it’s far better than Facebook chat), I plan my life on my Google calendar, use Google Chrome to make my online life easier. I store my photos on Google, use Google Earth to track Santa on Christmas Eve (yes I know – weird but so cool), use regular Google for tracking Britney Spears every move (most Googled word 2006 and 2008, beaten in 2007 by Paris Hilton) and work out what my next haircut will look like. My life without Google would be very different. Mock all you like but there’s millions of people around the world, the UK and in the South East like me!

Google is one of the worlds most powerful brands and its just turned 10 years old. When Google launched in 1998 it was a revolutionary search engine that we now not only take for granted but as marketers desperately try and understand as Google is arguably the only search engine that matters for SEO with around 90% of all search queries coming from it alone. What’s the secret of their success? There are hundreds of theories around, mine is simplicity. They deliver what is wanted, what is useful, adding value to the online community, just enough, never too much. They don’t take their brand too seriously either, they aren’t afraid to have fun. Google’s homepage is constantly changing to reflect the season, moods, news stories or life around it. Google has become a term in everyday language, it must be doing something right. Here’s to another 10 years Google, can’t wait to see what you do next…

Great post Emmy. I, like many other marketers, only really use GoogleAds and Google Analytics for my company’s website. They’re such simple tools. It’s also a great brand – no mean feat gaining an entry in the OED as a verb in under 10 years.

Good Blog

Trouble is when I google myself, I turn up as an accordian player…how sad is that. Hope nobody mistakes me for him.
